Ambitious Tottenham Hotspur F.C. pursuit of Real Madrid C.F. star reportedly accelerating as leading insider corroborates claims
A possible Premier League comeback for Antonio Rudiger is reportedly gaining traction, with Tottenham Hotspur F.C. emerging as one of the leading contenders for the Real Madrid C.F. centre-back.
Spurs currently find themselves in serious difficulty, sitting 16th in the table after finishing 17th the previous season. A bright start under Thomas Frank quickly unravelled, culminating in his dismissal as the club slid down the standings. With Tottenham only five points clear of West Ham United F.C. in the final relegation spot, the threat of demotion is very real.
Despite their precarious position, a summer rebuild is being considered — and Rudiger’s potential return to England is said to be accelerating. The German defender, who left Chelsea F.C. for Madrid in 2022, is reportedly attracting interest from Spurs as well as other London sides.
According to insider Graeme Bailey, intermediaries have approached Tottenham, West Ham and Crystal Palace F.C. regarding a move back to the capital. All three clubs are believed to have opened discussions over signing Rudiger, who could be available on a free transfer this summer. Meanwhile, teams from across Europe are also positioning themselves in the race.
Bailey further reports that Rudiger would be willing to take a pay cut to secure a return to English football. The defender currently earns around €280,000 (£243,300) per week. Tottenham may be best placed financially among the interested Premier League sides, though a significant wage reduction would make a deal more feasible for others.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia are also monitoring the situation and could comfortably outbid English sides financially. However, Rudiger’s desire to return to England may rule out a switch to the Middle East.
Landing the experienced centre-half would be a major boost for Spurs, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Cristian Romero, who has attracted interest from Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona and is reportedly open to leaving north London.
With European qualification looking unlikely unless Tottenham pull off a shock UEFA Champions League triumph, former scout Bryan King believes several key players could depart. He has suggested Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario and one of Dominic Solanke or Richarlison may all consider exits.
Elsewhere, Spurs face competition in the transfer market. Manchester United F.C. are reportedly keen on Christian Pulisic, who is also on Tottenham’s radar, and are rivalling Spurs — along with Leeds United F.C. — for Hayden Hackney.
