“Talks Still Ongoing”: Jurgen Klopp’s Agent Sparks Speculation Over Man Utd and Chelsea Links
The agent of Jürgen Klopp has disclosed that the iconic former Liverpool FC manager was sounded out by two of the club’s fiercest rivals after leaving Anfield.
Klopp stepped down in 2024, ending a near-decade spell in which he revitalised Liverpool and forged a powerful bond with supporters that few managers before him had achieved. The 58-year-old moved away from frontline coaching to become Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull GmbH, a position he has held for the past 13 months. However, he is set for a short return to Merseyside, assisting Kenny Dalglish during the Liverpool Legends fixture against Borussia Dortmund on 28 March.
Interest from Manchester United and Chelsea
Speaking to Transfermarkt, Klopp’s representative Marc Kosicke confirmed that both Manchester United and Chelsea FC made approaches following his Anfield exit, and that the interest has persisted.
Kosicke noted that before accepting his Red Bull role, Klopp had opportunities to manage the United States or England national teams — and potentially Germany, had Julian Nagelsmann not already been appointed. Despite contact from Chelsea and United, Klopp had been unequivocal that he would not take charge of another English club. According to his agent, the enquiries “haven’t stopped.”
Loyalty to Liverpool
As Kosicke emphasised, Klopp had made it clear that any managerial return would not involve another side in England. Given his deep affection for Liverpool, a move to a domestic rival — particularly one as historically competitive as Manchester United or Chelsea — was never realistic.
While some former players have swapped Anfield for those clubs, Klopp would have known that joining a direct rival after departing due to feeling drained could have damaged his standing among supporters. By staying true to his word, he has safeguarded his legacy in L4.
Although a future return to coaching — possibly at international level — cannot be ruled out, Klopp currently appears content in his broader strategic role. Turning down advances from United and Chelsea has only strengthened his status as a cherished figure among the Anfield faithful.
