Report: Tottenham-Linked Mauricio Pochettino Outlines Firm Transfer Conditions for Potential Real Madrid Move
Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of bringing back Mauricio Pochettino appear to have suffered a setback, with reports from Spain indicating the former Spurs boss is prioritising a potential switch to Real Madrid CF.
Spanish outlet Defensa Central claims the Argentine is under consideration for the top job at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this summer — a development that would severely dent the prospect of a sentimental return to North London.
Pochettino sets conditions for Madrid role
Currently in charge of the United States men’s national soccer team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, Pochettino has made no secret of his ambition to return to elite European club management.
However, he reportedly will not accept a move to Madrid without firm guarantees. The report suggests he has informed club president Florentino Perez that the existing squad needs a precise rebuild to unlock its full potential.
His preferred recruitment plan is said to include three major additions: two top-tier centre-backs and a commanding central midfielder. That vision is believed to mirror Madrid’s broader transfer strategy as they seek long-term direction following the departure of Xabi Alonso earlier this year.
With current head coach Alvaro Arbeloa still fighting to secure the position permanently based on results for the remainder of the campaign, Pochettino is reportedly monitoring the situation closely in case the role becomes available.
Spurs remain keen despite interim change
The timing is far from ideal for Tottenham. After parting ways with Thomas Frank, Spurs appointed Igor Tudor on an interim basis through to the end of the season.
Despite that short-term solution, Pochettino continues to be viewed as the leading candidate for the permanent position beginning in July.
Still revered by supporters — particularly for guiding the club to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final — the Argentine remains a hugely popular figure. Yet should Real Madrid satisfy his transfer demands, Tottenham may once again miss out on a longed-for reunion with their former manager.
