Barcelona elbow Tottenham aside as leading Bournemouth star’s ‘head turned’ by Catalan giants
Barcelona have surged ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League rivals in the race to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, with the Catalan side’s interest said to have turned the player’s head.
The 28-year-old centre-back is approaching the end of his contract and has already informed AFC Bournemouth that he will not extend his stay at the Vitality Stadium. Since joining from Feyenoord in 2022, Senesi has been a key figure on the south coast, and his availability on a free transfer has triggered widespread interest.
Several English clubs — including Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Sunderland — have made enquiries and held discussions with his representatives. Chelsea also explored a potential move, though their interest did not progress beyond initial talks.
Interest from abroad has intensified, with Juventus and Napoli monitoring developments. Atlético Madrid have expressed admiration for the defender, but it is Barcelona who have taken the most decisive steps.
Negotiations with the Spanish giants have gathered pace in recent weeks, and a proposal is being prepared that is viewed as the most appealing currently on the table. Sources indicate that Barcelona’s stature makes their interest difficult to overlook, placing them firmly in pole position for what could become one of the summer’s standout Bosman deals.
Senesi has featured in every Premier League match he has been available for this season, contributing to five clean sheets in 25 appearances while also registering four assists. However, he now appears set for a new challenge, with Barcelona leading the chase for his signature.
Elsewhere, Manchester United have informed Barcelona that they will not lower their asking price for Marcus Rashford should the Spanish side wish to make his loan move permanent. Barcelona hold an option to buy the 28-year-old for around £26m, and attempts to negotiate a reduced fee have reportedly been dismissed.
In addition, Barcelona remain keen on Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao, although they face strong competition from Arsenal. Despite the winger signing a long-term contract at San Mames, the deal includes a release clause believed to be around €100million (£87m / $119m), ensuring continued transfer speculation.
