Guardiola predicts Premier League title race as Arteta warns Man City

Pep Guardiola has revealed whether or not he believes Arsenal can win the Premier League this season. The Gunners gave Manchester City a run for their money last term, leading the title race by five points with just 11 games to spare.

But by the end of the campaign, Arsenal found themselves in second place and five points adrift of the reigning English top-flight champions. Desperate to finally knock City off their perch and get his hands on some silverware, Mikel Arteta splashed the cash in the summer transfer window.

The north Londoners forked out nearly a quarter of a billion pounds on the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber. Meanwhile, Guardiola spent just as much bring Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku to the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal have certainly reaped the rewards of their significant financial outlay; only three goals separates Arteta from his former boss. The Gunners currently sit third in the Premier with 36 points, while City rank second – also on 36 points – thanks to a greater goal difference.

At the top of the table is Liverpool, who have 37 points and a game in hand. While Jurgen Klopp’s side are leading the pack, Guardiola has named Arsenal as one of the favourites to win the title. Speaking to talkSPORT, the City boss said: “They are one of them. Hopefully we can be too there. They are absolutely.”

While Arsenal supporters will be flattered to hear one of the all time great managers heap praise on their club, Arteta is focused on the ‘unprecedented’ task at hand. Ahead of the Gunners’ clash against Newcastle United last month, the Spaniard said: “What has happened in the last five years is unprecedented.
.”It never happened with the amount of points and level of the teams. Now it’s the amount of teams with that level that is increasing and increasing.

“That’s why comparing to the past in this league is a waste of time. It’s very different to what it used to be, and that puts the demands of what we do every single day in a different scope.”
