Rafa Benitez has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Panathinaikos, according to The Athletic.<\/p>\n
The Spaniard, who famously guided Liverpool to their unforgettable 2005 Champions League triumph in Istanbul, returns to management just seven months after his brief and difficult spell with Celta Vigo came to an end.<\/p>\n
Benitez takes over from Rui Vitoria, dismissed in September, with Panathinaikos currently seventh in the Greek Super League and struggling for consistency both domestically and in Europe. The Athens side have collected nine points from six league matches and three from three in the Europa League so far.<\/p>\n
This latest role adds another chapter to Benitez\u2019s illustrious yet turbulent career \u2014 one that has seen him manage giants such as Real Madrid, Napoli, and Inter Milan, while also delivering both the Champions League and FA Cup during his time at Anfield.<\/p>\n
However, his legacy at Liverpool remains complex. Former players Lee Peltier and David Raven recently described him on The Football Historian Podcast as \u201cstandoffish\u201d and \u201ccold,\u201d suggesting that a language barrier and distant communication style sometimes strained relationships. Raven even recalled being told bluntly to \u201cjust sign it and shut up\u201d during contract discussions.<\/p>\n
