Captain Micky van de Ven led by example with two headed goals to hand Everton their first defeat at their new stadium as Tottenham moved up to third with a 3-0 victory. David Moyes\u2019 side, who had not conceded a league goal from a corner all season, allowed two in the first half as Spurs capitalized first through a clever set-piece routine and then through poor marking.<\/p>\n
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank handed on-loan Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani his first start, but it was Van de Ven who proved the biggest threat. His double not only secured the win but also made him the team\u2019s top scorer with five goals, having failed to score at all last season. Pape Sarr added a late header to seal a 13th point from a possible 15 on the road, form that has lifted Spurs to within five points of leaders and north London rivals Arsenal.<\/p>\n
It was an unusual display from Tottenham. After taking the lead in the 19th minute, they appeared to retreat into their shell and offered little threat until Van de Ven struck again in first-half added time. Spurs made the most of their few opportunities, while Everton failed to do so despite lively performances from Iliman Ndiaye, their standout player, and the returning Jack Grealish.<\/p>\n
Both wingers were doubled up on whenever they received the ball, and though Ndiaye\u2019s pace occasionally got him behind the defence, Everton created little danger through the middle. Their best early chance came in the third minute when Beto failed to control Ndiaye\u2019s cross, allowing Grealish a close-range shot that Pedro Porro blocked on the line.<\/p>\n
A team with only nine league goals this season could not afford such misses, and they paid the price. They were undone at a corner when Mohammed Kudus\u2019 delivery was flicked across goal by Rodrigo Bentancur\u2019s shoulder for Van de Ven to head home from close range. Everton then thought they had equalized, but Jake O\u2019Brien\u2019s header was ruled out after VAR deemed Ndiaye and Grealish to be interfering with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from offside positions.<\/p>\n
Spurs continued to threaten from set-pieces, and after Bentancur missed one chance, Van de Ven made it 2-0 with another header, finding space between Everton\u2019s centre-backs. By that point, Everton had conceded as many goals in 52 minutes as they had in their previous five home matches, and their poor scoring form meant the contest was effectively over.<\/p>\n
Ndiaye tried to spark a response, sending one effort wide and forcing Vicario into two fine saves, while Beto\u2019s overhead kick was also clawed out by the Tottenham goalkeeper. At the other end, Jordan Pickford denied former Everton forward Richarlison, who replaced Kolo Muani, but Spurs remained comfortable.<\/p>\n
