Having once led the Premier League, the Reds have now fallen seven points behind Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after suffering four consecutive league defeats.

That slump has put several players under the microscope, especially Van Dijk, who carries the responsibility of leading Liverpool’s backline.

Rooney’s remarks

On The Wayne Rooney Show last week, Rooney questioned the attitude and on-field presence of Liverpool’s senior stars, naming Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah as players whose body language has fallen below leadership standard.

“Their body language this term isn’t right,” Rooney said, suggesting the team’s main figures were lacking intensity and authority.

Van Dijk’s reply

But after Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa at Anfield, Van Dijk didn’t hesitate to defend himself and the squad.

“I didn’t hear him last year,” Van Dijk said with a grin, via Daily Mail.

“It honestly doesn’t bother me. He’s a legend of the game and someone who inspired many people, so I respect that. But that kind of comment? For me, it’s just a lazy criticism. That’s how I see it.”

The Liverpool skipper stressed that leadership in football isn’t just about shouting or showing emotion.

“It’s easy to point fingers when results don’t go your way, but he knows as well as anyone that this is a team sport. We help each other, we push each other,” he continued.

“When things are going well, no one says anything. That’s football – pundits will always talk. No hard feelings, and I don’t take it personally.”

Leading by example

Van Dijk’s composed response once again showed the calm authority he’s known for. While Rooney’s comments stirred debate, the Dutchman’s professionalism has only strengthened his reputation as a leader who lets his performances speak for him.

With huge games against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City to follow, Liverpool will need exactly that kind of leadership from their captain.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has hit back at recent comments from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, shrugging off suggestions that the Reds have shown a lack of leadership this season and labelling the criticism as “lazy.” The Dutch defender has been under increased scrutiny after Liverpool’s dip in form.
