Ajax have officially announced the dismissal of John Heitinga, ending a turbulent spell for the former Liverpool assistant coach.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Thursday, the Dutch club confirmed that the 41-year-old has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. Technical director Alex Kroes has also offered to resign amid increasing unrest within the club.<\/p>\n
Ajax dismiss Heitinga over \u201clack of progress\u201d
\nAjax\u2019s statement read: \u201cAjax has suspended John Heitinga with immediate effect. The head coach\u2019s contract, which was due to run until June 30, 2027, will now be terminated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe same applies to assistant coach Marcel Keizer. Ajax is seeking a new head coach; in the meantime, Fred Grim will assume Heitinga\u2019s responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kroes commented: \u201cIt\u2019s a painful decision, but after reviewing the past few months, we must admit that things haven\u2019t gone as planned. We\u2019ve seen too little progress and dropped points unnecessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although Kroes has offered to step down, Ajax\u2019s board has urged him to remain for stability.<\/p>\n
The decision follows weeks of speculation around Heitinga\u2019s position, including controversy surrounding James McConnell\u2019s unexpected loan move to Ajax \u2013 a decision said to have divided the club\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n
Could Heitinga make a Liverpool return?
\nHeitinga\u2019s connection to Anfield remains strong. He worked under Arne Slot during Liverpool\u2019s title-winning campaign last season before taking charge at Ajax in the summer.<\/p>\n
Upon his appointment, he spoke fondly of his time in England and the lessons learned alongside Slot.<\/p>\n
A return to Merseyside one day isn\u2019t out of the question. Pep Lijnders once left J\u00fcrgen Klopp\u2019s coaching team to pursue management before returning as assistant \u2013 and Heitinga could follow a similar path.<\/p>\n
