Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that club legend Tony Galvin has suffered a stroke.
\nThe 69-year-old former winger is currently recovering, with Spurs sharing the update in a statement posted on their social media channels.<\/p>\n
On X, the club wrote: \u201cEveryone at Tottenham sends their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 & 1982 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering after a stroke. We\u2019re all behind you, Tony.\u201d<\/p>\n
Galvin represented Spurs for nine years between 1978 and 1987, winning two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup during his time at the club. The Republic of Ireland international also featured for Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon Town but is most fondly remembered for his spell at White Hart Lane, where he made 201 league appearances.<\/p>\n
A key member of a squad that included Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles and Steve Perryman, Galvin initially played non-league football with Goole Town before joining Spurs. He played a major part in Tottenham\u2019s back-to-back FA Cup victories in the early 1980s, starting both the 1981 final and its replay against Manchester City, and repeating the feat in 1982 against Queens Park Rangers.<\/p>\n
Between those triumphs, Spurs also lifted the Community Shield, and in 1984 captured the UEFA Cup, with Galvin once again influential throughout their run, which included wins over Drogheda United, Feyenoord, Bayern Munich, Austria Vienna and Hajduk Split. Tottenham defeated Anderlecht on penalties in the final after a 2-2 aggregate draw.<\/p>\n
Galvin finished his playing career at Swindon Town in 1990 after being signed by Ardiles, later serving as his assistant manager there and subsequently at Newcastle United.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
