One Liverpool player could soon be facing a very uncertain future as his battle for regular minutes continues this season.<\/p>\n
Harvey Elliott left Anfield for Aston Villa on deadline day in the summer, heading out on an initial loan that would become permanent once he reached 10 appearances for the Midlands club (The Athletic). However, he\u2019s been stuck on just five outings since early October, and although Lewis Steele has hinted that Liverpool could recall him, nothing concrete appears to be happening yet.<\/p>\n
Elliott return to Liverpool remains on the table
\nSpeaking on the Inside Track podcast (via Football Insider), Pete O\u2019Rourke suggested that Unai Emery\u2019s side may now be hesitant to complete the permanent part of the deal.<\/p>\n
The reporter explained: \u201cThey might explore whether he\u2019d be better off going somewhere else. It\u2019s been far from the perfect loan \u2013 he hasn\u2019t had the minutes he expected. Villa are seemingly having second thoughts about making the move permanent. If he\u2019s not going to be in Emery\u2019s plans, a January return to Liverpool is certainly possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Liverpool should push for a recall if he continues to be overlooked
\nWith Elliott reportedly frustrated by his lack of opportunities \u2014 just 167 minutes of football so far \u2014 it\u2019s clear that the current situation benefits nobody. If he\u2019s still nowhere near the 10-game threshold by January, keeping him at Villa Park would make little sense. A recall would at least allow Liverpool to reassess his situation and explore fresh options.<\/p>\n
While it still feels unlikely that he\u2019ll play a major role for the Reds again, especially after struggling for game-time under Arne Slot last season, the door shouldn\u2019t be completely closed. Should injuries or other setbacks hit Liverpool\u2019s attacking ranks, there could yet be a route back into the squad for the England under-21 international, provided the club can bring his underwhelming Villa spell to an end.<\/p>\n
