Forest, meanwhile, climb to 16th after collecting only their third victory of the season.

It also marks the first time since 1965 that Liverpool have lost back-to-back league games by three or more goals, while the 20 goals conceded across 12 league matches is their worst defensive record at this stage since 1992. The defeat equals their joint-heaviest Premier League loss at Anfield.

So what is going wrong — and what needs to change?

Speaking to Premier League Productions after the match, Van Dijk admitted Liverpool fell short in “battles, challenges [and] the fight”, calling their overall play “rushed”.

The Dutch defender went on to say the team must “work harder” and acknowledged that the current situation is a “problem”.

“Everyone in the team has to take responsibility as well,” Van Dijk said.

“Football is a team sport and everyone has to step up. We need to accept this, take it on the chin, and work harder. We have to keep pushing.

“Everyone is disappointed — as they should be — because losing at home to Nottingham Forest is, in my view, very poor. That’s the least I can say. The goals we conceded were far too soft, and we all need to look in the mirror. I’ve been at this club a long time, and we’ve overcome setbacks before. We’ll bounce back, but it won’t happen overnight. I don’t quit — we will keep going.”

Van Dijk also addressed the sight of some supporters leaving early after Forest’s third goal.

He added: “I can’t control what fans do if they decide to leave early. I know they’ve stuck with us through the good and the bad. They’ll be with us when we come through this — and we will come through it.”

Liverpool next host PSV in the Champions League on November 26, before travelling to face West Ham on November 30.

The Liverpool skipper did not mince his words after a dismal outing at Anfield.
