The 19-year-old midfielder was handed a start alongside fellow teenager Lucas Bergvall as Thomas Frank reshuffled his team following Sunday’s derby defeat. Despite Spurs twice taking the lead through Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani, a Vitinha hat-trick plus goals from Fabian Ruiz and Willian Pacho ultimately condemned them to defeat.

Even so, the away fans applauded the players at full-time after seeing far more fight and intensity than in the Arsenal game. “The fans were unbelievable,” Gray said. “They’ve stuck with us through tough times and we can’t thank them enough. Hopefully they saw some positives tonight. These losses aren’t good enough for a club like Tottenham, and we want to improve.”

Gray and Bergvall combined brilliantly for Spurs’ opener, with Bergvall’s back-heel releasing Gray, who chipped a cross to the far post for Kolo Muani to head back across goal for Richarlison. Gray said their strong off-pitch friendship helps their link-up play on it. “Me and Lucas are really close. We trust each other 100%. Even under pressure, we know we can rely on each other.”

Making his first appearance in over a month after a calf injury, Gray slotted seamlessly into an energetic box-to-box role. On his responsibilities, he said: “It’s just man-to-man pressure. Find your man, stay with him, and look for the spaces midfielders won’t track. It was enjoyable.”

Although frustrated by the result, he believes the performance offers something to build on during a run of only three wins in 12 matches. “Losing is disappointing, but there were more positives than in the last game. We scored three goals against probably the best team in Europe. We’ll take that into Fulham.”

Gray added that the squad is determined to move on quickly from setbacks: “You can’t dwell on defeats when you play every few days.”

The teenager is happy to be back in his preferred midfield position after being used at centre-back and full-back last season due to the club’s injury problems. He praised Frank and his staff for their work on individual development. “The coaches have been brilliant. Last season was tough with lots of different roles, but I’ve learned from it. This season the staff have helped a lot with individual plans.”

He understands supporters’ desire for entertaining football but backs Frank’s tactical adjustments. “Every club wants to play exciting football, but against teams like PSG you sometimes have to adapt. They can punish you in a moment. We all want to play attractive football, but in some games you need a different approach, and we’re fully behind the manager.

Archie Gray described Tottenham’s travelling supporters as “unbelievable” after they endured another roller-coaster performance in Wednesday’s 5–3 loss to PSG.
