Gareth Bale has spoken in detail about why he chose to retire at 33.<\/p>\n
In January 2023, just weeks after leading Wales at the World Cup, Bale shocked fans by announcing that he was stepping away from both club and international football with immediate effect. The former Southampton, Tottenham, and Real Madrid star \u2014 who had joined LAFC on a one-year deal in June 2022 \u2014 revealed the news in an emotional statement on social media.<\/p>\n
At the time, Bale described retiring as \u201cthe hardest decision of my career\u201d and struggled to express how much playing for Wales meant to him. \u201cHow do I explain what this country and this team mean to me? How do I put into words the emotions I felt every time I wore that Welsh shirt?\u201d he said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t do it justice with words.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, more than two years later, Bale has revealed for the first time that his father\u2019s declining health was a major reason behind his decision, forcing him to rethink what mattered most outside of football. \u201cMy dad got ill and that played a massive role,\u201d he told GQ Magazine. \u201cPeople don\u2019t see what goes on at home, and I realised life is bigger than football.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also reflected on enjoying a quieter life after retirement. \u201cOur kids, our life, our marriage, our family, our friends \u2014 that\u2019s what\u2019s important,\u201d he said. \u201cThe things I used to stress about in football now make me laugh. Back then, you\u2019re anxious and nervous and you don\u2019t even enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bale said watching his children grow has become one of his greatest joys. \u201cWatching my son play football reminds me of my dad watching me. And my daughter\u2019s horse riding \u2014 seeing them enjoy things is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bale\u2019s career spanned 17 years and included five Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies. After emerging from Southampton\u2019s academy and becoming their second-youngest debutant at 16, he joined Tottenham in 2007, making 166 appearances before his then-record \u00a385.3m move to Real Madrid.<\/p>\n
