That lack of opportunities has persisted even as Arne Slot’s squad has been depleted by injuries to several attacking options in recent weeks.

On Monday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Chiesa’s former club Juventus had made “formal contact” over a potential return to Turin this month. However, James Pearce later suggested via X that Liverpool have received no such communication from the Italian giants.

Latest update on Chiesa’s future

Sky Sports News provided an update on Tuesday afternoon, relaying information from their Italian counterparts regarding growing Serie A interest in the 28-year-old.

They stated: “Napoli and Juventus are interested in signing Chiesa on loan from Liverpool, according to Sky in Italy. However, we understand that he is highly unlikely to leave during this transfer window.

There have been no official approaches made to Liverpool, either for a loan or a permanent deal, and the club would prefer to retain the player in January. Sky in Italy also report that Liverpool would only consider permanent offers.

Chiesa has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, but despite interest from Napoli and Juventus, we understand he is expected to stay put this month.”

Summer reassessment more realistic

With Alexander Isak ruled out for at least a couple more months and Mohamed Salah still away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool are in no position to allow Chiesa to depart mid-season — even if his involvement has been limited.

It would make sense for the Reds to keep him until the end of the campaign, with a clearer opportunity to revisit his future ahead of the summer window, when sourcing a replacement would be far more feasible.

While Slot may not view Chiesa as a central figure in his plans, the Italian remains a fan favourite and demonstrated his worth with a crucial last-ditch intervention against Sunderland last month, denying Wilson Isidor a stoppage-time winner.

Chiesa doesn’t strike as the type to agitate for a move away from Anfield, though privately he may be frustrated by his lack of minutes — particularly given Liverpool’s current shortage of attacking options.

For now, the club simply can’t afford to let him go, and all indications suggest he will remain. However, as long as his role is largely confined to substitute appearances, questions surrounding his long-term future are likely to persist.

With the January transfer window now well underway, Federico Chiesa’s situation continues to attract plenty of attention.
