Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Terry Yorath has died at the age of 75 following a short illness. He was the father of BBC presenter Gabby Logan, who was forced to leave Wednesday night\u2019s Match of the Day midway through the programme due to a family emergency.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Yorath\u2019s children paid tribute to their father, saying that while he was widely respected as a footballing figure, to them he was simply a kind, quiet and gentle dad. They added that although the family is heartbroken, they find comfort in believing he is now reunited with their late brother Daniel, who died in 1992 at just 15 years old from a genetic heart condition.<\/p>\n
Yorath is survived by his children Gabby, Louise and Jordan, as well as his grandchildren Reuben, Lois, Mila, Phoenix and Paloma.<\/p>\n
At international level, Yorath won 59 caps for Wales and captained the national team on 41 occasions. Born in Cardiff, he began his professional career with Leeds United in 1967, making 199 appearances over nine years. He won the First Division title with Leeds in 1974 and also reached the finals of the FA Cup, European Cup and Cup Winners\u2019 Cup.<\/p>\n
After leaving Leeds, he went on to play for Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Vancouver Whitecaps, Bradford City and Swansea City. He joined Spurs from Coventry in 1979 for \u00a3300,000, making 46 league appearances and scoring once during his two seasons at the club before moving to Vancouver.<\/p>\n
Following his playing career, Yorath moved into coaching and management, taking charge of Swansea City, the Wales national team, Bradford City, Cardiff City, Lebanon, Sheffield Wednesday and Margate. He narrowly missed guiding Wales to qualification for the 1994 World Cup, falling short by a single match, and led Swansea to promotion to the Third Division in 1988.<\/p>\n
He was also serving as assistant coach at Bradford City on the day of the Valley Parade fire in 1985, a tragedy in which 56 fans lost their lives and more than 270 were injured.<\/p>\n
During Wednesday\u2019s live broadcast of Match of the Day, Gabby Logan introduced the second match of the evening \u2014 Manchester City\u2019s 1\u20131 draw with Brighton \u2014 before leaving while the highlights were playing.
