The Italian forward had been named on the bench for Wednesday night\u2019s Champions League meeting with Marseille, but it soon emerged after kick-off that he had picked up an issue during the warm-up at the Stade V\u00e9lodrome and was therefore unavailable.<\/p>\n
In the end, Arne Slot\u2019s side produced a dominant performance to claim a 3-0 victory, meaning Chiesa\u2019s absence went largely unnoticed on the night. However, the winger is now facing a race against time to prove his fitness for the weekend.<\/p>\n
Chiesa facing late fitness test
\nJust before 11:30pm on Wednesday, Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele shared an update on X, explaining that the problem originated in training the day before the match and resurfaced during the warm-up.<\/p>\n
Steele wrote: \u201cFederico Chiesa pulled out of the bench tonight due to an injury he first felt in training on Tuesday, which came back in the warm-up. Liverpool return on Thursday and it\u2019s unclear whether he\u2019ll be fit to be involved on Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n
Slot optimistic over Chiesa setback
\nSpeaking after the game, Slot admitted he had hoped Chiesa would be fit enough to feature in Marseille but reassured supporters that he does not believe the issue is a long-term one.<\/p>\n
The 28-year-old will undergo further checks by Liverpool\u2019s medical team once the squad returns to Merseyside, with Slot expected to provide another update when he addresses the media ahead of the Bournemouth clash.<\/p>\n
Although Chiesa has mainly been used as a substitute this season, any extended absence would limit Liverpool\u2019s attacking options. That concern is heightened by Alexander Isak\u2019s ongoing injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined until at least March.<\/p>\n
