Paul Scholes believes Manchester United should make a move for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.<\/p>\n
The former United midfielder has encouraged his old club to pursue the 27-year-old centre-back, who has been involved in several controversies this season. Romero has openly criticised Tottenham\u2019s hierarchy on multiple occasions and was later sent off in a match against United.<\/p>\n
His public frustration with the club began in December 2024 when he questioned Spurs\u2019 transfer strategy, suggesting their lack of investment was leaving them behind their competitors. In January 2026, following a defeat to Bournemouth, Romero again criticised senior officials in a strongly worded social media post. Before editing it, he appeared to accuse the board of telling \u201clies,\u201d though the revised version still suggested the club\u2019s leadership should take responsibility.<\/p>\n
Romero said that during difficult periods, others at the club should speak publicly, but claimed they only appear when results are positive. In February, he also described it as a \u201cdisgrace\u201d that Tottenham had just 11 senior players available for their 2-2 draw with Manchester City.<\/p>\n
Posting on Instagram after that match, the Argentine praised his teammates and expressed his desire to help despite feeling unwell. He highlighted the limited squad numbers as \u201cunbelievable but true and disgraceful,\u201d while thanking supporters for their continued backing.<\/p>\n
Shortly after, Romero\u2019s difficult run continued when he was dismissed in Spurs\u2019 defeat at Old Trafford. Despite the turbulence surrounding the Tottenham captain, Scholes remains an admirer.<\/p>\n
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes said he loves watching Romero play and suggested the defender seems unsettled in north London. He noted that Romero has criticised both fans and the board and appears frustrated, but added that he would gladly welcome him at Manchester United, praising his personality and competitive edge.<\/p>\n
Romero, however, recently signed a contract extension keeping him at Spurs until June 2029. Tottenham boss Frank has defended his captain, calling him a young leader who is still developing.<\/p>\n
The Danish manager explained that leadership evolves with experience, reflecting on how much he himself grew after turning 30.
