However, across 143 appearances in red, his time at the club proved far more turbulent than many had anticipated.

Despite the ups and downs, the 1999-born forward etched his name into the Premier League record books with a remarkable – and somewhat bizarre – feat that may take some beating.

Nunez’s Unmatched Night Against Chelsea F.C.

In January 2024, Nunez set an extraordinary record during a league clash with Chelsea by striking the woodwork four times in a single match.

Having previously showcased his clinical edge at S.L. Benfica, where he netted 48 goals in 85 outings, that ruthless streak didn’t consistently translate to English football. Close-range finishing, in particular, often proved problematic.

Against Chelsea, his misfortune unfolded in dramatic fashion. He first surged forward and unleashed a powerful effort with his stronger right foot that beat goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic — only for the ball to crash off the crossbar.

Moments later, he met a pass from Ibrahima Konate and instinctively fired with his left foot. Petrovic managed to get fingertips to it, diverting the shot onto the post once again.

A golden opportunity followed when Liverpool were awarded a penalty. Nunez stepped up, but despite Petrovic diving the wrong way and much of the goal gaping open, his effort clipped the outside of the right post.

If that wasn’t enough, he then rose to meet a pinpoint cross from Andy Robertson in the 75th minute, only to see his header rebound off the crossbar for a fourth time — leaving the Anfield crowd stunned.

Remarkably, he hit the woodwork with a right-footed shot, a left-footed attempt, a header, and a penalty — a combination that makes the record even more unique.

Fortunately for Nunez, who was brought to the club under former manager Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool still cruised to a 4–1 victory that day. The scoreline, however, might have been even more emphatic had his finishing matched his movement.

Though he has since departed English football, Nunez’s extraordinary four-hit woodwork performance ensures his place in Premier League history could endure for years to come.

Often a polarising presence at Anfield, Darwin Nunez saw his finishing come under relentless scrutiny during his three-year stint with Liverpool F.C..
