Latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip as former Reds target Borussia Monchengladbach star Manu Kone has expressed a desire to join a new club this summer
Liverpool may have an opportunity to complete a transfer of a player who was previously linked with a move to Anfield. The Reds are yet to make their first signing of the summer transfer window but are continuing to be linked with a host of players.
Arne Slot is the new head coach of Liverpool and is currently assessing his squad in the United States as part of the club’s pre-season tour. Part of that assessment will be determining what new signings, if any, will need to be made this summer, with a decision expected to be made alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes.
One player who has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool is Manu Kone. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder was credited as a target for the Reds last year when Jurgen Klopp was manager.
Since the transfer window closed last summer and Liverpool signed four new midfielders, the links to potentially signing Kone have quietened down. Now the latest update may see that change in the near future.
Monchengladbach sporting director Ronald Virkus has confirmed that Kone has expressed a desire to leave the Bundesliga club this summer. Kone is currently with the France squad for the Olympics, and Virkus has explained that a decision about the midfielder’s future could be made following the conclusion of the tournament.
“Manu Kone told us quite early on that he would like to leave the club. But there is no movement there either,” Virkus told German news outlet Kicker.
“We are watching the Olympic Games and then we will have to see what happens. If something comes up, we will listen to it. But without the pressure to do it. In the end, it has to be a good fit for all parties.”
Sky Sport in Italy have reported that the German club will demand around €30m, or £25.3m, for their 23-year-old star, who has predominantly been used in a deep-lying midfield role in the Bundesliga.
