Manchester City beat rivals Manchester United in the Community Shield and star playmaker Kevin de Bruyne sent an ominous message after their triumph
Manchester City picked up the first piece of silverware of the season after beating Manchester United on penalties to win the Community Shield. Pep Guardiola’s side halted their barren run in the English top-flight curtain-raiser following defeats against Leicester City, Liverpool and Arsenal in the previous three seasons.
Arsenal have fallen short behind their North West rivals in the last two campaigns, finishing runners-up in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta will be looking to get one over on his former employer with City looking to scoop an unprecedented fifth successive crown.
The Gunners kick off their season at home to Gary O’Neil’s Wolves on Saturday, August 17. While, the reigning champions face a difficult trip to the capital where they face free-spending Chelsea in their Premier League opener.
City needed a late Bernardo Silva equaliser against the Red Devils at Wembley after Alejandro Garnacho broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute. Jonny Evans missed the crucial spot-kick during the penalty shootout before Manuel Akanji converted from 12 yards to earn City a seventh Community Shield triumph.
Taking to Instagram, De Bruyne posted an ominous message after securing their first piece of silverware. He wrote: “The first one!”
On the other hand, Guardiola isn’t entirely convinced that his side are ready to go again and compete in the Premier League for a fifth successive title.
“I cannot answer if we are ready,” said the City manager. “We could have lost today, we were close to losing with minutes left so that’s why you have to wait.
“I saw many things today that I like. The first 35 minutes were beyond excellent, unexpected for the time we are together.
“We are far from our best. It’s normal but it’s better starting with one trophy won. It’s nicer but the reality is nothing changed for the fact we won.”
