Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that first-choice goalkeeper David Raya may miss the Premier League clash against Leicester City this weekend due to a suspected injury. Raya, who has been in exceptional form for the Gunners this season, was absent from Arsenal’s 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday, raising concerns over his fitness.
The heavily rotated Arsenal squad cruised past Bolton, with Arteta opting to rest several first-team regulars following a demanding schedule, which included three away fixtures. Raya was notably absent after being spotted limping with a bandage on his right knee following the 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.
Despite initial speculation that the injury was not serious, Arteta has confirmed that Raya is dealing with a muscular issue.
Speaking after the Bolton win, Arteta was asked about Raya’s availability for the weekend and said, “We don’t know yet. He has got a muscular injury.”
With backup goalkeeper Neto cup-tied due to his earlier involvement in the competition with Bournemouth, 16-year-old rookie Jack Porter was handed his first-team debut against Bolton. Porter received words of encouragement from former Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale, who posted on social media, “Go well bud!” ahead of the match.
Raya has played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s recent success, making key saves in crucial wins over Wolves, Aston Villa, and Tottenham. Meanwhile, Arteta took the opportunity to praise young talent Myles Lewis-Skelly, who made his debut in the closing stages of the draw against City. The 17-year-old midfielder has impressed with his versatility and competitive nature.
“He [Lewis-Skelly] is a competitor,” Arteta said. “In every duel, you see how he reacts with his teammates, his eye contact, and his desire to learn. He can play in multiple positions—left-back, No.6, No.8—and adapts quickly to different roles on the pitch.
