“Arne Slot Fires Warning to Darwin Nunez Amid Liverpool’s Struggles in Front of Goal”
Arne Slot quickly came to the defense of Darwin Nunez, emphasizing that it’s premature to judge the Liverpool striker despite his underwhelming Champions League display on Wednesday.
With goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah securing a 2-0 win over Bologna, Liverpool made it two victories in as many European matches this season. However, Nunez’s performance was disappointing, as he squandered a key chance in the first half and had an earlier goal disallowed for offside.
Despite the Uruguayan having only one goal this season—his first since April—Slot refrained from criticizing him, stressing that the whole team needs to do more to provide better opportunities for Nunez.
“I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s only scored one [goal since April] because you also need to consider his playing time,” Slot said when questioned about Nunez’s lack of goals. “This was just his third start of the season, so I don’t see it the way you do, focusing only on the individual.”
Slot pointed out that in the first hour, the team failed to create sufficient chances for Nunez due to missed final passes. “If we had done better, we could have given him more opportunities.”
He continued: “It was a great goal against Bournemouth, and today, despite facing a tough opponent, he was involved, but his teammates didn’t always find him when they could have.”
Slot also insisted it’s too early to draw conclusions about Nunez’s goal tally after just three starts. Reflecting on his own early success as the first Liverpool manager to win eight of his first nine matches, Slot acknowledged that both Nunez and the team are still developing. “We need to improve, that’s clear, but there are many positives to take from tonight and our other games,” he added, while admitting there were moments when Liverpool lost control and allowed the opposition to threaten more than he would have liked.
