Arsenal target Eberechi Eze has embarrassed Germany’s players in the wake of Jack Grealish’s transfer.
Some of Germany’s stars have been left embarrassed after underestimating Eberechi Eze, as the Arsenal target has now surpassed Jack Grealish in England’s selection hierarchy.
Eberechi Eze has turned the tables on his German doubters, who once claimed he couldn’t match Jack Grealish’s influence. Now, with Arsenal and Tottenham vying for his signature and Grealish departing Manchester City for a loan spell at Everton, the contrast in their career paths is stark. Eze’s rise proves those in the Germany camp wrong after they rated Grealish as the superior winger just a year ago.
The story goes back to Euro 2024, when Gareth Southgate opted to include Eze in England’s squad instead of Grealish. At that stage, Eze was making waves at Crystal Palace, while Grealish’s role at City was beginning to diminish. Reports suggested Germany’s squad felt Grealish was the more dangerous attacker, with his ability to “provoke fear” in defenders, while Eze was seen as less threatening due to his lower profile.
Fast forward to today, and Eze is one of the Premier League’s most sought-after players. According to The Guardian, Spurs have begun talks to sign him, but the £68m-rated forward would prefer a switch to Arsenal before his release clause expires on Friday. The 27-year-old ended last season with 14 goals and 11 assists, played a key role in Palace’s FA Cup triumph, and helped defeat Liverpool in the Community Shield.
Grealish, in contrast, managed just 16 starts last term and has taken a step down to secure more game time at Everton. He hasn’t featured for England in almost a year, missing out on all three of Thomas Tuchel’s squads since the new manager took charge. Eze, meanwhile, has been selected every time, marked his debut under Tuchel with a goal in a 3-0 win over Latvia, and will aim to keep his place for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
