Arsenal enter the 2025/26 Premier League season with the weight of expectation firmly on their shoulders, while Manchester United are simply aiming to avoid another turbulent campaign. The two clubs face off in the headline clash of the opening weekend, both unveiling major summer recruits. United boss Ruben Amorim has rebuilt his attack with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, whereas Mikel Arteta finally secured the prolific striker Arsenal have long pursued in Viktor Gyokeres.
It’s only week one, but both sides already have plenty riding on the result. Here’s how our writers see the contest shaping up.

Arteta might have stretched the truth in claiming Arsenal have been the most consistent side over the last three seasons, but he’s right about one thing: this year is make-or-break. Arsenal now have the centre-forward they’ve been missing, and there are no more excuses. With City, Liverpool and Chelsea all contenders, anything short of lifting the trophy won’t be enough.
United’s summer overhaul puts pressure on Amorim, but Arsenal will be out to make a statement at Old Trafford. I expect them to show their quality and leave Manchester with all three points.

United rarely lose their first league game, and I think that trend continues. Amorim’s new-look frontline should pose plenty of questions, while Arsenal’s well-drilled defence will make sure they don’t get overrun. A draw feels right—United will take encouragement, and Arteta will feel the heat if Arsenal stumble.

United have spent big but their attack will take time to click, something they can’t afford against a team as settled as Arsenal. I can only see the visitors winning comfortably.

Arsenal look the sharper, more cohesive outfit, but Old Trafford has often been a stumbling block, with just two wins in 18 attempts there. United’s £200m summer spend and strong pre-season may not yet be enough to get them over the line. Given the recent history between the sides, another draw seems the most likely outcome.
