£50m asking price for midfielder from Chelsea’s PR machine

From the way he went from relative unknown to reliable insider upon the arrival of Clearlake and co. at Chelsea, it’s clear to us that Ben Jacobs is well connected with the current ownership.

This can sometimes be useful, but it does also mean you have to be aware to what extent he is a mouthpiece for them. Today is a great example – he’s suddenly produced an asking price of £50m for Conor Gallagher from seemingly nowhere, a very precise figure and one he is repeating everywhere.

We already know that the club have put themselves in a financial position where a sale will be necessary because of how much they’ve already spent. They just hadn’t counted on Gallagher establishing himself as a key player for his team in the interim.

Now they’re in a tricky spot, and will need Jacobs and others in a similar position to really start putting out some serious spin to get anyone to swallow this crazy deal.
