Liverpool extended their Champions League journey with a hard-fought victory over RB Leipzig.
One standout performer, however, has sparked debate about his future at Anfield after a stellar display against the German side.
On Wednesday night, the Reds maintained their perfect start in the Champions League, securing a 1-0 win at the Red Bull Arena against Bundesliga contenders Leipzig.
Darwin Nunez’s first-half goal, scored in the 27th minute, was enough to clinch the victory as Arne Slot’s men put up a solid defensive effort.
In the second half, Leipzig pressed for an equaliser, bombarding the Reds’ defence, but Liverpool held firm thanks to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Republic of Ireland international, filling in for the injured Alisson Becker, was instrumental in keeping Leipzig at bay with a series of crucial saves.
Following his heroics, former Liverpool player Steve McManaman weighed in on Kelleher’s future at the club, suggesting the Reds face a difficult decision next summer.
McManaman stated, “It’s almost unfair to call him a No.2. He’s been exceptional when called upon, and Liverpool are fortunate to have kept him this long.”
He added, “With the arrival of Mamardashvili and the ongoing competition for the starting role, there will be tough choices ahead. Neither Alisson nor Kelleher will want to be a backup.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot also praised Kelleher after the match, noting, “We’re lucky to have such depth in our squad. Ali’s absence was felt, but Kelleher stepped up brilliantly.”
Slot acknowledged the challenge of facing Leipzig on the road, adding, “We controlled much of the game, but the final moments were tense. If we had drawn, it would have felt like a loss.”
