Alexis Mac Allister has revealed the one Premier League player he’d most like to see join him at Liverpool.
The 26-year-old Argentina international, who is part of the World Cup-winning squad and now plays in England, named a fellow countryman as his dream addition to the Reds.
Cristian Romero Tops Mac Allister’s Wishlist
Speaking to TNT Sports, Mac Allister was asked which player he’d choose to bring to Anfield. His answer was immediate – Tottenham Hotspur’s centre-back Cristian Romero.
Mac Allister praised his Argentina teammate, saying via GOAL: “Cuti [Romero’s nickname] is a player I really admire. He makes the game look effortless and gives me confidence. For me, he’s been the best centre-back in the world for some time.”
Romero Move to Liverpool Seems Unlikely
Despite the admiration, Romero isn’t expected to make the switch to Merseyside. While he and Mac Allister have a strong connection from the national team, there are a few practical reasons why a transfer to Liverpool may not make sense.
Statistically, Romero impressed last season with an average of 3.57 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes – better than Virgil van Dijk (2.54) and Ibrahima Konate (2.01), per FBref. However, in other key metrics, he falls short.
His pass completion rate (89.5%) is lower than Van Dijk’s (91.6%) and Konate’s (90.2%), and he also won fewer aerial duels (60.3%) compared to Van Dijk (72.1%) and Konate (71.8%).
Injuries have also been a concern – Romero missed 27 matches over the past year due to various issues, according to Transfermarkt. On top of that, his disciplinary record is questionable, with critics like Gary Neville calling out reckless challenges, including one on Argentina teammate Enzo Fernandez during Spurs’ defeat to Chelsea in the 2023/24 season.
Mac Allister’s fondness for Romero is understandable given their bond with the national team, but realistically, it’s hard to see the Spurs defender replacing either of Liverpool’s current centre-backs any time soon.
