Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, was forced to leave the pitch in the 79th minute due to an injury sustained during a prior Champions League match against AC Milan. Despite missing two matches earlier because of the same issue, Alisson returned to action, thinking he had fully recovered. However, after playing only three matches since his comeback, it now appears that the Brazilian shot-stopper will be sidelined for a longer period than before.
Following his substitution, Alisson was replaced by Vitezslav Jaros, the Czech goalkeeper, who made his debut for Liverpool due to Caoimhin Kelleher’s illness-related unavailability.
The Reds secured a victory at Selhurst Park, thanks to an early goal from Diogo Jota in the 9th minute, assisted by Cody Gakpo, who started on the left wing while Luis Diaz remained on the bench.
After the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot addressed the media, expressing his doubt that Alisson will be back before the international break. On a positive note, Slot highlighted Jaros’ debut, saying it’s encouraging to see every squad member contribute to the team’s success.
Alisson was instrumental in denying Crystal Palace’s attacks, keeping a clean sheet with four key saves. However, Slot confirmed that Alisson’s hamstring injury is a serious one, ruling him out until at least November.
In Alisson’s absence, Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to step in as Liverpool’s primary goalkeeper. Kelleher, who has only started two matches this season, performed admirably in those appearances, conceding just one goal in a 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over West Ham. He also proved himself last season, filling in for Alisson during a similar injury spell and delivering top-notch performances throughout.
With this win, Liverpool remains at the top of the table with 18 points from seven matches, suffering only one loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Close behind are Manchester City with 17 points after a 3-2 win over Fulham, and Arsenal in third, level with City, following their 3-1 victory against Southampton.
Liverpool’s next challenge will be a home fixture against Chelsea at Anfield on October 20, following the international break.
