Alisson Becker’s wife, Natalia, expressed their deep sorrow in a touching tribute to Diogo Jota, stating, “We are heartbroken.”

The wife of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident. The news of the Portuguese striker’s death at the age of 28, alongside his 26-year-old brother, was announced yesterday morning.
The accident occurred in the Zamora region of Sanabria, where firefighters responded to the scene on the A52 after the vehicle caught fire. Reports indicate that emergency services were called just before 1 am on Thursday as the vehicle was heading toward Benavente. Authorities are investigating whether a tire blowout caused Jota’s Lamborghini to leave the road. A service will be held in Portugal tomorrow to lay the brothers to rest.
Tributes have poured in from the football community for Jota, a father of three who had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days prior. Jota had formed close friendships with Liverpool’s South American players during his time with the club.
Natalia Becker shared a photo of her family with Jota on her Instagram story, expressing her sorrow in a heartfelt message translated from Portuguese. She wrote: “How sad. It’s hard to believe this is true. This is a family we love so much. May God provide comfort and strength during this devastating time. We are heartbroken. We will always cherish the memories. Rute and family, you are not alone; we will be here for you.”
Many of Jota’s teammates also offered their condolences. Argentinian midfielder Alexis Mac Allister remarked on Jota’s character, saying, “It hurts a lot; we will miss you. Rest in peace, dear Diogo.” Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez expressed his sorrow, sending strength to Jota’s family. Former Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino shared his condolences and prayed for comfort for Jota’s loved ones.
Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk reflected on Jota’s impact, stating, “I can’t believe it; I don’t want to believe it. It’s unimaginable to lose two sons, a husband, and a father. My heart breaks for your family. We promise to support you during these challenging times.”
Mourners gathered at Capelas da Ressurreicao for the wake ahead of the funeral, including Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. Liverpool FC has postponed their pre-season training in light of Jota’s passing, delaying the return of players initially scheduled for July 4 and 7.
