Following another disappointing performance in a Spurs jersey, it seems Timo Werner’s time may be running out, and Ange Postecoglou’s recent comments suggest he has lost patience with the player.
Postecoglou’s Thoughts on Timo Werner
Timo Werner earned another start for Spurs in the Europa League due to Heung-min Son’s lack of full fitness but was substituted at halftime for Brennan Johnson as Postecoglou sought to make a tactical shift.
Previously, Postecoglou expressed confidence in Werner, asserting to Football.London that the winger would improve and was working hard to turn his form around. However, after the game against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night, Postecoglou’s tone seemed to indicate a growing frustration, suggesting he can no longer rely on Werner to contribute effectively.
Postecoglou remarked, “It’s hard to pinpoint the reason for his struggles, but he’s clearly lacking in confidence. It can be tough to break out of that mindset. All we can do is support him and help him regain his confidence. He delivered a great pass to Mikey Moore early on, but he needs to find a way to make a meaningful impact because we need players to contribute in those positions.”
The Importance of Impact
That last statement encapsulates the issue perfectly. If Werner, or any player, isn’t making a meaningful contribution, there’s little justification for them to remain on the pitch. At some point, the player’s feelings must be set aside to acknowledge that they are not fulfilling their role, and unfortunately, Werner has reached that stage.
His repeated missed opportunities this season directly contradict Postecoglou’s vision for the team and style of play. It has become evident that other players are ready to step in and fulfill those responsibilities if Werner cannot resolve his issues.
Mikey Moore’s Promising Performance
In contrast, when comparing Postecoglou’s remarks about Werner with his praise for Mikey Moore’s performance, the difference is striking. Postecoglou described Moore as “exciting” to watch, highlighting his fearlessness and impressive ability to handle pressure despite his youth.
Moore’s impactful 20-minute stint in the second half against Alkmaar demonstrated that he could provide far more in terms of offensive contribution than Werner currently can.
