Arne Slot addresses interruption and early end to pre-match tribute for late Liverpool star Diogo Jota

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has spoken about the awkward moment when a pre-match tribute to late Reds forward Diogo Jota was interrupted and ended early.

Jota and his brother tragically died in a car crash earlier this summer, and Liverpool fans have been honouring the former No.20 throughout pre-season. Before the Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace at Wembley, a minute’s silence was held, but it was cut short due to noise from the stands.

Speaking after the game, Slot suggested it was likely a misunderstanding — possibly from a Palace supporter unaware of the tribute — rather than an act of disrespect.

“I don’t think this was planned,” Slot said. “Maybe the fan didn’t know about the silence and was simply cheering for his team, then other Palace fans tried to quiet him. I don’t think there was bad intent.”

Jota, a key player and popular figure in the squad, has left a deep void at Liverpool. The club retired his shirt number, fans placed wreaths at Anfield, and several teammates attended his funeral. The loss has made for a painful summer as the team heads into the new season.

On the pitch, Liverpool suffered a setback, losing on penalties to Palace after a 2-2 draw in normal time. New signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong both scored on debut, but Palace twice came from behind. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk endured unusually poor performances.
