Arne Slot clearly takes issue with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s tweet from this morning.
Today shouldn’t be overshadowed by the news of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure from Liverpool.
Instead, it should be a celebration of what he—and the rest of the squad—have achieved this season in securing the club’s 20th league title.
More importantly, this day belongs to the supporters who never got to fully enjoy the 2019/20 title win due to COVID-19 restrictions. It’s a moment for them.
Tension between Trent and Arne Slot?
While it would be unfair to claim Trent deliberately aimed criticism at Arne Slot, the timing of his social media post—”20 years. Gave it everything.”—doesn’t go unnoticed. It followed closely after Slot’s surprising comments about his training attitude.
The new head coach expressed dissatisfaction with Trent’s effort, stating: “There were times he could have done more. I told him he’s a better defender than he shows.”
Jurgen Klopp, however, quickly came to Trent’s defence at the recent LFC Foundation Gala Ball, where he praised the vice-captain’s commitment throughout his time at the club.
Was it really ‘everything’?
We maintain that much of the scrutiny around Trent’s defending has been exaggerated. No, he wasn’t perfect, but his attacking contributions often more than compensated.
Still, it’s concerning when a manager questions a player’s work ethic. Struggling to improve is one thing—choosing not to is another. And it’s especially problematic if a player is preparing to leave the club for free while still underperforming.
Trent is a fantastic footballer—no doubt about that. But if he insists he gave it everything in his final year at Liverpool, he might need to take a closer look at whether his effort truly matched that claim.
