Liverpool manager Arne Slot has revealed that he kept Darwin Núñez on the pitch longer during the team’s 1-0 win over Girona to boost the striker’s confidence by helping him score.

The Uruguay international has struggled since joining Liverpool, managing just one goal in his last ten appearances across all competitions. Despite missing a few opportunities against Girona, Núñez continued to be a threat, though Mohamed Salah’s penalty ultimately secured the Reds’ victory.

Addressing Núñez’s recent form, Slot admitted it might be a confidence issue, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo:

> “What I can agree on is that he missed a few chances. Then it’s always the question: does this have anything to do with low confidence or is this just a phase he’s going through? Every striker experiences periods where everything goes in and times when it doesn’t, no matter how hard they try.”

> “I would have loved to see Darwin score because strikers need goals. That’s why I kept him on for so long. He was a constant threat but unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net.”

While Slot’s efforts to support Núñez are commendable, some Liverpool fans may worry about the impact on the team. If the 25-year-old’s struggles persist, Slot may face tough decisions about giving opportunities to other players who can convert chances more reliably.
