Liverpool have impressed in Arne Slot’s debut season as manager, but the Dutchman believes the Reds must take a crucial next step to prove their title credentials: winning key away games against top opponents.
Liverpool face Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, a venue where they haven’t secured a victory against a top side since defeating Newcastle in August 2023. While they’ve earned draws at Arsenal and Newcastle this season, Slot insists that victories against elite teams like Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham are essential to their Premier League title ambitions.
“To win this league, you need a lot of points,” Slot said. “There are so many strong teams that you must win difficult away games as well. We’ve already won some tough ones—Wolves and Crystal Palace come to mind—but the away matches against top-six or top-eight teams are even tougher. You don’t have to win them all, but you definitely need a few big results in these games.”
Slot dismissed criticism of Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou’s attacking style, focusing instead on the intensity Spurs bring to their game. He praised their high-pressure approach, noting that Tottenham’s aggressive playstyle poses a significant challenge.
“When I think of intensity, Tottenham stands out,” Slot said. “Their pressing is incredible, and their strikers work extremely hard off the ball. We’ll need to match their intensity if we want any chance of a positive result.”
Liverpool’s preparations are boosted by the return of Diogo Jota, Harvey Elliott, and Federico Chiesa from injury, giving Slot a full complement of attackers to choose from. However, he cautioned that not all are fully match-fit yet.
“It’s great to have six attackers back, but not all of them are ready to play 90 minutes,” Slot admitted.
