Arne Slot has made it clear that Caoimhin Kelleher will make way for Alisson Becker once the Liverpool goalkeeper returns from injury, though not everyone agrees with the decision.

Before Kelleher’s costly mistake against Newcastle, Slot had been warned that he might be making the wrong call regarding the Irishman’s future. Kelleher has performed admirably in Alisson’s absence this season, helping Liverpool remain undefeated and top of both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

However, Kelleher’s misjudgment on a free-kick led to a late equalizer from Fabian Schär in Wednesday’s 3-3 draw against Newcastle, which threatened to undo Liverpool’s progress after Mohamed Salah had given them the lead. Kelleher failed to react to the flight of the ball, leaving an open net for Schär to exploit.

Before the match, Amazon Prime Video pundit Shay Given had questioned whether Kelleher’s strong form had created a dilemma for Slot, with Alisson soon to return. Slot, however, remained firm in his decision, emphasizing that the Brazilian will reclaim his spot once fit.

“I’ve been clear about this decision several times,” Slot stated. “A goalkeeper situation is different. Kelleher has been outstanding, and that’s what we should focus on now instead of what will happen in a week or two.”

Despite this, former Chelsea and Everton player Pat Nevin expressed concerns on BBC Radio 5 Live, suggesting Slot should stick with Kelleher. “Caoimhin Kelleher has been extraordinary,” Nevin said. “If they drop him once Alisson is back, what will that do to his confidence? They should back him until he makes a mistake.”

While Kelleher’s error against Newcastle was rare, it highlights why Slot will turn back to Alisson when he’s fit. Kelleher is solid, but Alisson is widely regarded as the world’s best, and in moments like these, his presence could make the difference between securing three points and settling for one.
