During Liverpool’s last Premier League game of the 2024–25 season against Crystal Palace, a photo of Mohamed Salah hugging assistant referee Derek Eaton went viral online. An Arsenal fan captioned it with “I don’t want to speak,” hinting at possible bias.

What many, including the fan, didn’t know was that this match was Eaton’s final appearance as a Premier League assistant referee.

The hug was actually a respectful farewell from Salah, acknowledging Eaton’s retirement after a long and respected refereeing career. Football journalist David Lynch described Salah’s gesture as a “really nice touch.”
