Speaking about the speculation, Bayern director Uli Hoeneß remarked: “What am I supposed to say? You’ve been publishing nonsense for weeks about him going to Manchester City, even though he was actually in Liverpool.”

Wirtz was recently spotted in the UK, and many assumed he was meeting with Manchester City officials. But it now seems the real destination may have been Anfield, not the Etihad.

Although Bayern might still be in contention, it appears Liverpool have pulled ahead of City in the race for the talented German international.

The Reds’ interest in Wirtz came as a surprise to many.
