Brentford boss Thomas Frank has shared his thoughts on the competition for Tottenham’s left-back spot between Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence.
Thomas Frank has spoken about his full-back options at Tottenham, highlighting the competition between Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie while noting the advantage of having strong depth in the position.
Spurs have made progress this season, though Frank admits there are still areas that require improvement if the team is to take the next step. With several new arrivals still settling in, on-field chemistry is developing, which has at times affected the side’s attacking flow.
The left flank, in particular, remains a key focus, where Xavi Simons and Spence are continuing to build their partnership. However, the return of Udogie provides a more natural balance, with the Italian’s left foot allowing him to overlap and deliver crosses in a traditional manner.
Speaking to the club’s media, Frank praised both players:
“I’m privileged to have four full-backs, all performing at a high level. Destiny’s left foot makes him a natural fit on the left side, while he and Djed share similar qualities in terms of physicality and energy. Destiny’s left is vital, but Djed with his right is just as important.”
While Frank is pleased with the competition, Spurs fans have been pushing for Udogie to be given more minutes, particularly ahead of the Brighton clash. Still, Spence’s strong form has made it tough for the Italian to reclaim a starting spot.
With Tottenham competing in four tournaments this season, Frank stressed that rotation will be necessary, ensuring both full-backs will have plenty of chances to make their mark.
