It’s still uncertain whether Pep Guardiola will extend his contract with Manchester City or depart in the summer. If he chooses to leave, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is reportedly being considered as his successor.

The 42-year-old has an outstanding record at the Bundesliga club, remaining unbeaten during the 2023/24 domestic season and nearly achieving an unbeaten treble.

The Spanish coach is being linked with Liverpool and Real Madrid, and based on his current form in 2024/25, it’s easy to see why. Alonso’s team has recorded three wins, two draws, and one loss in the Bundesliga, along with two Champions League victories without conceding a goal.

If reports from the Daily Mail are accurate, Manchester City could also enter the race for Alonso’s services by the end of this season.

Given Alonso’s expansive, attacking playing style—similar to Guardiola’s—it wouldn’t be surprising if City saw him as a natural fit. The continuity between his approach at Leverkusen and City’s style might appeal to the club’s leadership.

However, City faces a period of uncertainty with ongoing legal charges. If found guilty, it could lead to players and managers departing from the club. Still, City will likely continue working to maintain their success on and off the pitch, regardless of the outcome.

As the season progresses, the decision whether Guardiola stays or hands the reins to Alonso will become clearer, potentially ushering in a new era for Manchester City.
