Chelsea gift part of Club World Cup bonus to Diogo Jota’s family
Chelsea’s players have paid tribute to the late Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother by donating part of their FIFA Club World Cup bonuses to the family.
On July 13, Chelsea stunned Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-0 victory in the final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, securing the title and earning the club roughly £85 million from the tournament, which was staged across 12 venues in the United States.
The final came less than two weeks after Jota and his brother Andre Silva tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Cernadilla, Spain. According to The Athletic, Chelsea’s squad agreed to give around $500,000 (£368,184) from their $15.5m (£11.4m) player bonus pool to the brothers’ family.
Jota had a strong bond with Chelsea winger Pedro Neto from their time together at Wolves and in the Portugal national team. Just two days after Jota’s death, Neto played in Chelsea’s quarter-final against Palmeiras, wearing a shirt featuring the names of both brothers and visibly fighting back tears.
In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Neto remembered Jota’s humour, kindness, and wisdom, vowing that his friend’s legacy would live on.
