Romeo Lavia was forced to leave the field after a collision with Jurrien Timber during Chelsea’s match against Arsenal.
Enzo Maresca suffered a significant injury setback when Lavia was substituted in the second half following the clash with Timber. In an effort to block a shot from the Arsenal defender, Lavia lunged into a tackle but was unable to prevent Timber from getting past him and firing wide of the far post.
After the collision, the 20-year-old went to the ground and received immediate medical attention. Determined to keep his team in the game, Maresca replaced Lavia with Enzo Fernandez, who made an immediate impact, assisting Pedro Neto for the equalizer.
Maresca also made further changes, bringing on Mykhailo Mudryk for Noni Madueke and later substituting Malo Gusto for Reece James. Ahead of the London derby at Stamford Bridge, Maresca explained his decision to drop the Chelsea captain, saying, “Reece is fit and we are happy with him. Since his return, he has played all the Premier League games, but today we made a different decision.”
In his pre-match comments on Friday, Maresca hinted at tactical changes, saying, “We’re always looking for something different, whether it’s Arsenal or another team, to find the best way to attack and defend. We’ve done that this season against every team. Arsenal is arguably the closest to the best team in England, City, but we’ll focus on our game, prepare well, and aim for the win.”
On whether the upcoming match could be Chelsea’s biggest of the season, Maresca shared, “I don’t know how worried I was tonight against this team. I treat every game the same—seriously, preparing the best way we can, focusing on attack and defense. But tonight, I was very worried because it’s easy to drop mentally if you’re not prepared. If you ask me which of the next two games I want to win, I want both, but if I had to choose, it’s the next one. We play Leicester away soon, and I feel very close to them!”
