Close Liverpool Supporter Shares Account of Alleged Racist Abuse Towards Semenyo and Subsequent Events

A Liverpool supporter who claims to have witnessed the alleged racist abuse directed at Antoine Semenyo during the Reds’ clash with Bournemouth has shared his account of events online. The incident occurred just before the half-hour mark, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to halt the game while he spoke with both managers and Merseyside Police. Play later resumed, but an investigation led to one fan being escorted out of Anfield.

After the match, a supporter named Nick Collins posted a detailed thread on X, explaining what he saw. He said the flashpoint came around the 28th minute when Semenyo was preparing to take a throw-in. According to Collins, a man nearby suddenly shouted something at the Bournemouth winger, who then asked him to repeat it. The fan repeated the remark and threw chewing gum at him.

Minutes later, play was paused, leaving those around the scene uncomfortable and eager for the individual to be removed. Collins explained that police eventually escorted the man out of the ground at 21:01, after he initially refused to leave and then caused a scene. He added that it appeared police, rather than stewards, were required to handle such incidents to ensure a proper investigation could take place.

Collins stressed that if the allegations are proven, the supporter should face a lifetime ban, saying there can be “no excuses” for racist abuse.

Liverpool later issued an official statement condemning discrimination of any kind and confirming they are cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
