Cristian Romero insists that not even Lionel Messi could take his focus away from chasing more silverware with Tottenham.

Tottenham’s season is still in its infancy, but the club already has plenty on the line across several competitions. Under Thomas Frank, Spurs are set to challenge on four fronts, with the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup all offering chances to secure silverware.

After last season’s Europa League triumph, there is a clear hunger within the squad to build on that success and add more trophies to the collection. On top of their club commitments, a number of Tottenham players also have an eye on international duty, with the 2026 World Cup drawing closer.

Cristian Romero is expected to play a central role for Argentina as they aim to defend their crown. The tournament could be Lionel Messi’s last World Cup, but Romero insists his focus is on Tottenham, even though he hopes his compatriot will feature. Speaking to the club’s official media, he said: “If he is fit, I believe he can still take part. He is the greatest player in history. I enjoy having him as a team-mate and sharing those moments with him. But right now, my head is on the next match against Villarreal. My priority is Tottenham and making sure we win.”

Romero has been buoyed by Spurs’ strong start under Frank, with three wins from their opening four Premier League fixtures leaving them just three points behind Liverpool. Reflecting on the progress made, he said: “I always want the best for the club. I see a really positive structure and one where we can keep growing. The organisation is excellent, and the manager has brought real positivity in a short time. We are all focused on the next game.”On what success means for him and Tottenham, Romero highlighted the ambition within the group: “You compete at this level to win. It would be easy to say we want to win everything, but we have to be realistic. We have a great squad and a great manager, and we believe we can achieve something special this season. Winning another trophy would be incredible for us and for the fans.”
