Tottenham defender Cristian Romero featured for Argentina overnight as they cruised past Brazil in a dominant display.
Romero has been a pivotal figure for Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina side in recent years and featured in both of their matches during the March international break as they secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Argentina edged Uruguay 1-0 last Friday in a tight contest, putting them on the verge of qualification, which was later confirmed after Uruguay drew 0-0 with Bolivia.
Despite already qualifying, Argentina didn’t take their foot off the gas and produced an emphatic 4-1 win over bitter rivals Brazil. Goals from Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Giuliano Simeone sealed the convincing victory.
However, the game wasn’t without a slip-up for Romero. With Argentina leading 2-0, the Spurs defender lost possession to Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, who capitalized to reduce the deficit for Brazil.
Argentina quickly responded, with Mac Allister restoring the two-goal cushion and Simeone adding a fourth to round off the performance. After the match, Romero took to social media to reflect on the result and show appreciation for the fans.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Romero wrote: “With humility and the desire to keep taking this team to the top. Goal achieved and a great win. Thank you all for your continued love — see you soon. @Argentina”
The victory came just hours after reports emerged that Atletico Madrid are eyeing a summer move for Romero. The 26-year-old, whose contract at Spurs runs until 2027, has attracted interest from the La Liga side as they look to reinforce their backline.
Romero has struggled with fitness this season, making only three Premier League appearances since November. He picked up a groin injury shortly after returning against Chelsea and didn’t feature again until recently, despite being back in training since February.
During his absence, Romero made headlines with his candid criticism of Tottenham’s board, including chairman Daniel Levy, over their lack of investment in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
“Manchester City compete every season. Liverpool strengthen their squad, Chelsea do too — even when they underperform, they invest again and now you see the results,” he told Telemundo Deportes.
“You have to realize something isn’t working. It’s always the same — the players, then the managers — but the real issue stays. Hopefully, the people in charge realize who’s truly responsible. This is a great club with the potential to fight for titles every year.”
