On Tuesday night, the Uruguayan forward was left out of the starting lineup in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, only coming on for Cody Gakpo with 10 minutes left in the game, by which time Liverpool had the victory secured.

Gakpo, the man Nunez replaced, scored Liverpool’s second goal in the 63rd minute with a powerful header from Mo Salah’s cross. Initially ruled offside by the assistant referee, a VAR review later confirmed that Gakpo was indeed onside, and the decision was overturned.

Before the review was even complete, Nunez didn’t wait for any official confirmation. As soon as he saw the linesman’s flag, he approached with a playful finger-wagging gesture, seemingly signaling that the call was wrong—which, as it turned out, it was.

Liverpool fans loved Nunez’s cheeky reaction. Although he might have been frustrated seeing Luis Diaz, a natural winger, start up front instead of him, Diaz’s hat-trick certainly justified manager Arne Slot’s decision.

In his brief time on the field, Nunez still managed to make an impact, with his stoppage-time shot deflecting to Liverpool’s number 7, who then completed his hat-trick.

While Nunez still has room to boost his goal tally (just two so far this season), moments like his reaction to the assistant referee continue to win him affection from Liverpool supporters, who likely got a good laugh from his confident gesture.

Some might even suggest that the 25-year-old has a better instinct for offside calls than some of the professionals assigned to make them!
