Speaking to Sky Sports, former scouting chief David Pleat recalled the first time he saw Dele play: “When I first watched him at 16, he was athletic, a box-to-box midfielder with great physicality, stamina, and skill on the ball. To me, it was an easy decision.” Pleat explained that he made repeated efforts to push the deal forward with the club’s chairman but faced delays. Eventually, Daniel Levy reached out, asking if £5m might be too much for a player at that level. Pleat’s response was clear: “Take it, all day long.”

Pleat also revealed some surprising insights into how transfers are actually handled at club level. While a chairman may sign off on transfers, it’s the bank managers who often have the final say in how the deal is structured.
He explained, “No scout has the final decision. In the end, it’s not even the chairman, it’s the bank manager. Transfers go through several channels before being recommended to the chairman, who will support the manager if the funds are available. But ultimately, the bank manager decides if the payment is made in one lump sum or installments. The whole process is fascinating.”
A Worthwhile Investment
Although Spurs may not have made a profit on Dele’s £5m signing, the midfielder proved to be worth every penny. While his time at Tottenham ended on a sour note, fans still hope he can rediscover his best form and return to the top once again.
