Deal agreed — Liverpool now awaiting club’s approval to complete transfer, says Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool may soon reach a breakthrough in their pursuit of Marc Guehi this summer.

The Reds currently have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and Giovanni Leoni available in central defence, but adding the Crystal Palace star would strengthen their depth for the 2025/26 campaign.

While Konaté and Gomez are high-quality defenders, both have battled injuries and inconsistency in recent months.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are ready to push above £30m to secure Guehi, with the England international eager to join Arne Slot’s side before the September 1 deadline. Personal terms will not be an obstacle, leaving Palace to decide whether to strike a deal with the reigning Premier League champions.

From Palace’s perspective, selling now makes sense. Guehi has no plans to extend his contract beyond 2026, making this the club’s final opportunity to earn a fee before losing him for free. Chairman Steve Parish has admitted this is the most logical outcome, even though the club has already seen Eberechi Eze depart for Arsenal.

Manager Oliver Glasner, however, publicly opposed the move, stressing in a press conference that Palace “cannot” afford to let Guehi go without a replacement ready to step into the Premier League immediately. His comments suggest that new signing Jaydee Canvot—seen as Guehi’s long-term successor—is unlikely to be thrown straight into the starting XI.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Palace’s hierarchy, who must weigh the risks of losing a key player now against letting him leave for nothing next year. If Liverpool increase their offer beyond £30m, it could tip the balance in their favour.
