Declan Rice couldn’t stop laughing after seeing Micah Richards’ enthusiastic reaction to his first of two incredible free-kicks during Arsenal’s commanding 3-0 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday night. The Gunners delivered a performance for the ages at the Emirates Stadium, overwhelming the reigning European champions in one of their finest ever Champions League displays.

Rice broke the deadlock in the 58th minute with a magnificent free-kick that sailed over Real Madrid’s wall and beat the highly rated Thibaut Courtois. Brimming with confidence, the £100 million England midfielder then repeated the feat just 12 minutes later with another flawless strike into the top corner.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after being named Player of the Match, Rice said, “I don’t think it’s really hit me yet. I just checked my phone and it’s gone mad. To score my first free-kick was incredible — and then to do it again? I had the belief. I’m honestly lost for words. It’s a night I’ll never forget.”

Rice went on to call it “the best moment” of his career so far, adding: “Two free-kicks against Real Madrid, in a Champions League quarter-final at home — what more can I ask for?”

Arsenal’s third goal came courtesy of Mikel Merino in the 75th minute, sealing a dream result for the north London side. They now head to the Bernabeu with a solid lead, though they’ll remain wary of Madrid’s legendary pedigree in European competition.

CBS Sports caught up with Rice after the match as he stood next to Arsenal great Thierry Henry and watched Richards’ live reaction to his first goal. Rice burst into laughter at Richards’ emotional outburst, as the former defender said, “Declan, what a guy! I love you so much.” Rice replied, “Thanks, mate. You spoke it into existence — and it happened!”

Despite the celebrations, Rice knows focus is key ahead of the return leg. If Arsenal can finish the job in Spain, a semi-final clash against either Paris Saint-Germain or Aston Villa awaits.
