Real Madrid and president Florentino Perez are not brushing off their recent defeat. Less than a day after their surprising 3-1 loss to AC Milan in the Champions League, reports suggest Real has made an ‘urgent’ transfer decision.
This marks Real’s second group-stage defeat this season, following a 1-0 loss to Lille. Despite Vinicius Junior’s equalizer, Los Blancos ultimately fell short against the seven-time European champions.
Real’s defense has been under fire, especially after conceding four goals in last month’s El Clasico loss to Barcelona. Now, Perez is reportedly prepared to do something rare: authorize spending in the January transfer window.
According to Marca, Perez aims to sign a right-back urgently, as Dani Carvajal is out for the season due to an ACL injury, leaving only Lucas Vazquez as a senior option. While Real has tested center-back Eder Militao in this role, coaches reportedly remain unconvinced. They are also cautious about fast-tracking 17-year-old Jesus Fortea, considered a promising talent but possibly too young for the first team.
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly Real’s primary target, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2025. Though a pre-contract for next summer is possible, a January move could also be considered, albeit for a lower fee. However, Liverpool remains firm about keeping the 25-year-old, with no intention of selling mid-season. James Pearce of The Athletic recently called any January move for Alexander-Arnold “absolute nonsense.”
Marca also notes that Liverpool has no immediate need to sell Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, or Virgil van Dijk, making any transfer attempt complicated.
